Care & Maintenance of Laminate

Here is some general information and some basic tips.

  • Use a damp cloth to blot up spills as soon as they happen. It is wise to never allow any liquids to stand on your floor.
  • For tough spots, such as oil, paint, markers , lipstick , ink or tar use acetone/nail polish remover on a clean cloth and then wipe the area with a clean damp cloth to remove any remaining residue.
  • Sweep , dust and vacuum your floor regularly with the hard floor attachment (note : do not use the beater bar) this will prevent the dirt and grit from accumulating, and scratching the floor.
  • Periodically clean the floor with cleaning products made specifically for laminate floor care.
  • Do not wash or mop the floor with soap and water , oil soap detergent or any other cleaning liquids. This could cause swelling , warping , delamination , and or joint separation and void the warranty.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners , ammoniated or chlorinated cleaners.
  • For spots such as chewing gum or candle wax it is best to harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper such a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Before Installation

You would like a problem –free installation and to help ensure this process , find below a helpful check list of things to do before the installer arrives.

  • Who is moving the furniture. If you wish the installer will do it for a small fee. If not you should make arrangement to have the room cleared and ready to go.
  • Make sure you know who’s is removing your existing flooring. Normally the installers will take care of this as disclosed in the proposal.
  • Measure door clearances before you have your laminate installed. If the new floor is thicker you doors may have to be trimmed down.
  • As with everything paint first. Plan on installing your laminate last.

During installation

To make you laminate look good for now and a long time to come, proper prepping and installation is critical.

  • Current flooring, existing flooring will need to be removed. You installer will make sure the sub floor is smooth and level.
  • Moisture testing: you installer will check for moisture in the subfloor to prevent later problems with buckling and cupping.
  • Installation: using the proper tools the installer will cut and place the planking or tiles around the floors perimeter to allow for expansion.
